Select the second face you want, you might have to use the cube in the top right corner to rotate the assembly as shown above and find the face. Select "Apply" to complete the mate constrain. It is highlighted blue in the constrain box, in the example above. After apply has been hit for the mate constrain, select the "Flush" constrain that is to the right of the mate constrain, highlighted in blue above.

The flush constrain places faces side by side, facing the same direction on an axis. The flush constrain works the same was as the mate, just select the two faces you want to constrain. In the example above two faces are selected. Continue using the flush and mate constrain until the part can no longer move. A part will turn blue when it is selected, select a part then left click on it to try to drag it.

If it does not move, continue to the next steps. If it does move, try adding more constraints. Prior Contests. CAD HW. DFM Extra Credit. FA20 Schedule. Lab HW1. Lab HW Lab HW2. Lab HW3. Lab HW4. This week, we will review how to use individual parts to create an assembly. The process itself is not very difficult, but if it is not done properly, it can cause quite a headache. Since we will later use the animation option within Inventor itself, it is especially important that students are comfortable with assemblies. Here are the main points you should probably note:. It is generally good to "Ground" your main component the one where most of your constraints will be made. It is recommended to place components and constrain them one at a time.

There are three general categories of constraints — we are only really concerned with:. Assembly — basic constraint used to constrain objects to proper orientation with respect to one another by using surfaces, edges, planes, points and axes. Motion — used for components such as meshing gears or rack and pinions. Within the Assembly constraints tab, there are 4 types of constraints :.

Offsets are used to specify the distance or angle between the two surfaces you are constraining For Mate, Tangent, and Insert The offset will move the objects so that they are the specified distance apart default unit in inches Note: you can input a negative offset to move the object in the opposite direction For Angle The offset will angle your objects so that their planes are the specified degrees apart from each other. It is easiest to just check the constraints and you can generally see what the issue is.

If not, right click and use Inventor help The motion constraints are slightly more complicated — there are two options:. Two round objects — gears and pulley systems. Different approach with circles and gears:. With circles, you select the contact surface of the objects and the ratio is automatically calculated using the diameters. With gears, you select the hole of the gear and then enter the ratio of teeth. A round and a flat object — rack and pinion systems.

Select the edge of the round object to highlight the rotational axis. Multiple assemblies can be combined to form a more complete assembly. Once an assembly is complete, it can then be inserted onto a drawing file. Constraint Tips using the Mate and Angle Constraints Constraining your parts can make all the difference when you are preparing for your presentation and construction your animations.

Because of the difficulty in doing these constraints, here are a few tips and solutions to problems you may face When doing constraints, you often need to consider each dimension that is a factor, i.
